Lamppost Farm Beef Cattle - Utilizing Devon Genetics

Picture
Glenstorm - Our Devon Bull Calf
At Lamppost Farm, we have begun to establish our grass-based beef herd.  Our first beef cows arrived in October 2009.  Today, they play a significant role in rejuvenating our pasture and growing into some of the best beef in the Mahoning Valley.   These cows were the beginnings of building a herd that will represent our philosophy and practice of holistic high-density grazing.  Read this link by Gearald Fry, President of the North American Devon Association.  It is titled, "Are You As A Cattle Breeder Pleasing To God?"

The picture on the previous page is Keystone Barnabas.  He is the Sire to Glenstorm, our first purebred Devon bull, who recently arrived at Lamppost this spring.  We look forward to the establishment of Devon cattle at our farm because it is claimed that Devons are the "best in the grass business".  Because of their ability to convert grass into healthy and marbled meat, we will be able to sell grass-fed beef without the high costs of grain.  Also, Devons have been used as a triple-purpose breed, for meat, milk, and work.  Who knows, maybe someday, two of our devons will pull a log out of the woods to be cut on our mill, dried in the solar kiln, and made into a nice piece of furniture for you?

*NOTE*: Lamppost Farm Beef will not be available until Spring 2011 at the earliest.
